Ship's Reporter
Pioneering celebrity interviews from New York Harbor, 1948–1952
Ship's Reporter was hosted by Jack Mangan and broadcast on WJZ-TV New York. In an era before transatlantic air travel became commonplace, Mangan brought his camera crew to the city's piers and aboard luxury ocean liners to interview prominent passengers as they arrived from or departed for Europe.
The 15-minute segments, shot on 16mm film, featured an impressive roster of guests including Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Alfred Hitchcock, Bela Lugosi, Oliver Hardy, Graham Greene, Tennessee Williams, W. Somerset Maugham, Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, and The Andrews Sisters. Mangan notably gave literary figures—novelists, playwrights, and historians—the same celebrity treatment as entertainers.
